| Title: |
Marching mother and daughter
|
| Description: |
Marching mother and daughter, Lois Burke (1947) and Linda Burke Olson (1978) march with the UA Alumni band at the 2008 Homecoming Parade. Lois was one of the first women allowed to march in the UA Band in 1942, many of the young men were at war serving in the military and women had to step into roles that were usually held for men only. She was presented the Bear Down award from the Alumni Band as a “Living Legacy”. In the 40's women wore skirts and the men wore slacks. Even though she graduated in 1947 the then band director Samuel Fain would ask her to come back and fill in when he didn't have enough to field a complete band. She played professionally at the Blue Moon while in college, and also played with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra.
